4.3 Quantitative data analysis from students questionnaires
4.3.1 Students‟ responses to authentic materials in speaking skills
Cluster 1(students‟ responses authentic materials in speaking skills) comprises Items 1, ,3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12( see Appendix 2). The Mean of the
whole cluster was calculated to students‟responses to the teaching of authentic materials in speaking skills ( Table 4.8).

Table 4.8: Students’ responses to authentic materials in speaking skills As can be seen from table 4.8 , this is the Mean , which, in this case is 1.82 higher than middle value of the scale. This figure indicates that students generally agree with the research about using authentic materials in speaking skill .
4.3.1.1 The necessity of using authentic materials

According to the chart 4.11, 84% of the students strongly agreed and 16.00%
of the students agreed with the idea of the neccessity of using authentic materials.
As a result, it can be said that students were well aware of the necessity of using authentic materials in speaking skill.
Student 1, when being asked , proved to be hesitant to show her preferences for learning speaking skill with authentic materials.
“I like to learn English through authentic materials although they are difficult to my level, specially, when I have opportunity to watch films from audio-visual materials, my listening skill and pronunciation become better.( Student interview )
Student 2 and Student 3 shared idea that:
“ when learning speaking with authentic material, we can exposed to real discourse, as in videos of interview with famous people where our intermediate level can listen for general idea( Student interview)
The use authentic materials could help to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and students‟capacity to practicipate in real world events; and help to satisfy students‟concern and actual needs.
4.3.1.2 Students’view toward authentic materials

It can be seen from Chart 4.12 , in comparing responses to Item 4, Item 6, Item 7 and Item 9 ( See Appendix 2a) , we can see that Chart 4.12 shows a big gap between what students‟view to authentic materials are. This gap is illustrated in Chart 4.12 above . Means of these items are rather high ( Mean =1.1 &1.36 &2.32 ).
Meanwhile ,“there are not many real topics in learning speaking skills with authentic materials” were not received agreement by a large major of students(
Mean=4.46).
How students deal with this problem can be obtained by interviews. The first student expressed that:
“Before I did not know about what is authentic materials, and I just learned speaking skill through my teacher at school and now at University. But at present, HUFL have fully facilities such as Computer, projector, DVD to support teaching for teacher. So learning speaking skill became more interesting and fun. Through audio-visual I have opportunity to practice listening and how to correctly pronounce.( Student interview )
Student 1 added opinion that:
“Because authentic materials often use native language by native speake and with familiar topic which is easy to follow and practice communicating. So my English now is better than before. My teacher ofen use video or visual to develop our speaking skill and she explain more some usefull structure for us to remember and practice after ( Student interview)
In response to this question, student 4 stated that:
“If a teacher asks me to speak for two minutes in any topic suddenly, it may be difficult for me to generate ideas. However, if teacher shows any picture or poster or a video clip and asks to describe that, then it is easier to generate ideas.” ( Student interview)
Student 5 expressed her opinion that:
“I can learn English from real life. Or maybe I can say, I will see how the people in the target community live. Morever, I would like to learn from materials which are more relevant to daily life. I don’t like materials which are too academic.( Student interview)
4.3.1.3 The effectiveness of using authentic materials
The Mean of Item 3, 8, 10, 11,12 (see Appendix 2) are presented in line (see Chart 4.13 so as to summarize the overall the effectiveness of using authentic materials.

From what we can see in the Chart 4.13 , the Mean of each Item shows that the effectiveness of using authentic materials toward students are rather higher than middle value. The result from the Mean tend toward the agreement side. It can be concluded that using authentic materials had a large effectiveness toward students.
The gap between items are small. Item 12 with statement (Mean =1.3) “through authentic materials, I know about many different cultures and social mores”, It seem to be that students express their preference toward authentic materials in classroom because of its authenticity. On the other hand , authenic materials containing features of native speakers which has been extensively used to improve curriculum in order to teach the combination of culture and language of another country . Item 11with statement (Mean =1.22) “When I learn speaking skill through authentic materials such as : Video , news, Films, etc, I have more opportunity to approach native language”. However, the gap between of Item 11 compared with the rest ones is rather big specially with Item 3(Mean =2.04 ) and Item 8 (Mean =2.18). If students are to use the language to communicate effectively in the real world, Rogers and Medley (1988) propose that students have to experience the language as it is used for real communication among native speakers. This can be done through the use of aural authentic materials in the language classroom.
When being asked about the effectiveness of using authentic materils , the large major of students in the interview responsed their critical in different answers :
Student 6 shared that:
“Because authentic materials is by native speakers, so when I learn with them, I have a chance to enjoy and listen how they pronounce and then I will follow as my real practicing”(Student interview)
And Student 7 expressed that:
“Through the real conversations from Video, song, Film, I not only know more about culture, social but also might approach native language more effectively. Such ways are very useful and fun” (Student interview)
4.3.1.4 Students’attitudes toward authentic materials
Item 2 and 5 in the questionnaire deal with students‟ attitudes to authentic materials. The finding show that 52.00% of respondent agreed and 48.00% of respondent strongly agreed that I like to learn speaking skill with authentic materials than only textbook”. Result obtained from Item 5 (see Appendix 2) reveal that a large majority strongly agreed with statement “learning with authentic materials is more interesting than textbook”. Only 28.00% of participants agreed.
Chart 4.14: Students’attitudes to authentic materials
Most of the participants claimed that the material was more meaningful and it helped them to understand the listening section better and enjoy some special thing from audio-visual material. That is a reason why they like to learn speaking skill with authentic materials .
