INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Language serves as a vital communication tool among individuals, with English emerging as a global lingua franca In Asia, English has transcended its role as merely an academic subject, becoming an essential skill for everyone The quest for effective English learning methods poses a significant challenge Researchers have explored various approaches to enhance English proficiency, yet the rapid advancement of society and information technology calls for more innovative strategies in English education.

It seems to be that learning online can bring many benefits for our English learning

The advent of computers and the internet has significantly transformed our lives, offering numerous advantages across various sectors, including the economy, politics, culture, health, and particularly education Computers and online resources have become essential tools in mainstream education, greatly enhancing the learning experience Consequently, language acquisition, especially in English, has seen notable advancements.

Learning English online offers numerous advantages due to technological advancements and modern teaching methodologies The Internet provides students with the opportunity to learn independently, fostering a self-directed approach to language acquisition Research, such as the study by Kung and Chou (2002), shows that students generally have positive attitudes towards online English learning Additionally, the Internet allows for personalized instruction and enhances the learning experience by integrating multimedia resources, making the process more engaging and effective.

According to Tronenko (2002), online language materials significantly improve information accessibility and provide diverse ways to engage with the target speech community (Warschauer, 1996) Unlike conventional textbook-based learning, Internet resources can be regularly updated, ensuring that learners have access to the most current language materials.

Recent literature emphasizes the need for English learners to actively engage in their learning process rather than passively absorb information In today's information-rich environment, learners are encouraged to explore and create language while evaluating their own progress (Brown, 2001; Su & Kinshuk, 2002) Additionally, fostering learner autonomy and motivation is crucial, as online language teaching materials must cater to individual backgrounds, needs, and learning styles (Soboleva & Tronenko, 2002).

With the rapid technological advancements and evolving pedagogical methods, online learning has emerged as an effective way to enhance English proficiency The Internet offers a wealth of interactive resources for practicing and improving language skills, along with extensive access to socio-cultural knowledge that traditional learning materials like textbooks and audio cassettes often lack.

To master English, it's essential to enhance all four fundamental skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing However, many students, including myself, find listening to be particularly challenging Common obstacles include difficulty in understanding the material and identifying key information Traditional listening resources like audio cassettes and CDs can become monotonous, leading to a lack of motivation among learners This has driven me to explore new methods that ignite interest and ambition in English listening Additionally, while all English skills can be effectively taught online, time constraints often limit access to these valuable resources.

I only concentrate on listening skill

This study aims to enhance English listening skills among students at Hai Phong Private University by exploring the effectiveness of online listening resources The goal is to foster positive attitudes towards English listening and improve overall proficiency in the language.

At HPU, the current state of English listening skills among English majors reveals a need for improvement, as students express varying attitudes towards both traditional listening practices and online English listening resources To enhance their self-study experiences, it is essential for students to adopt effective online listening strategies, such as utilizing diverse audio materials, practicing active listening techniques, and engaging with interactive platforms that foster comprehension and retention.

Scope of the study

To effectively learn English, it's essential to enhance all four fundamental skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing However, my primary focus is on improving my online English listening skills With the goal of achieving excellent results in my studies, I am concentrating solely on this aspect of language learning.

-Finding out the reality of learning English listening skill of students in foreign language department at Hai Phong Private University

- Offering suggestions for English majors on learning English listening online.

Methods of the study

To gain a comprehensive understanding of listening and online learning, this article reviews key reference books that explore the concepts of listening, effective methodologies, and successful techniques for enhancing English listening skills in an online environment.

Second, the survey questionnaire created for students in English major at HPU to find out information necessary for creating the type of online activities learners would find effective

Third, more information about students‟ attitude, recognition, and difficulties they meet will be gathered from interview with the surveyed students.

Design of the study

The study consists of three main parts: Introduction, Development, and Conclusion

Part I: Introduction shows the reasons, the aims, the scope, the methods as well as the design of the study

Part II: Development includes three chapters:

Chapter 1: Literature review aims to answer the questions related to listening, listening online that introduce the listening skill and its features

Chapter 2 : “ A study on how do students in English major at HPU learn listening skill” is referred to the analysis and findings information from survey questionnaires made to the first year students and interview for other students These help examine the real situation of learning listening skill as well as difficulties students meet and their expectations of using listening techniques to improve their English listening skill

Chapter 3 : “Ways to listen English online effectively” are suggested with the hope that students can try and have positive feelings to learning listening skill And then they could enhance self-study ability and improve their listening skill

Part III: Conclusion summarizes the discussed parts in the paper and some suggestions for further study

Part I of the study introduces the topic, while Part II focuses on the literature review regarding listening skills and presents survey questionnaires aimed at first-year English major students at HPU to assess their current English listening proficiency Additionally, Part II offers various online resources and methods that students can utilize to enhance their listening skills independently.

Listening skill: An overview

Since the early 1970s, researchers like Asher, Dostoevsky, Winitz, and later Krashen have highlighted the significance of listening in language comprehension, establishing it as a crucial element in second language acquisition Listening has become recognized as a vital component in the language learning process.

Listening is a crucial skill that students will be evaluated on in real-life situations, as it plays a vital role in daily interactions Each individual may have a unique understanding of what listening entails, highlighting its subjective nature According to Howatt and Dakin, effective listening is essential for successful communication and understanding in various contexts.

Listening, as defined in 1974, is the skill of recognizing and comprehending the spoken words of others This intricate process requires the listener to grasp the speaker's accent, pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary while simultaneously understanding the overall meaning A proficient listener excels in all these aspects at once.

Besides, Thomlison‟s (1984) definition of listening includes “active listening” which goes beyond comprehending as understanding the message content, to comprehension as an act of empathetic understanding of the speaker

Gordon (1985) emphasizes that empathy is crucial for effective listening, going beyond mere politeness in recognizing a speaker's viewpoint He asserts that empathetic understanding fosters "egocentric prosocial behavior," where the listener genuinely acknowledges and cares for the speaker's welfare and interests.

According to Ronald and Roskelly (1985), listening is an active process that necessitates skills similar to those used in writing and reading, such as prediction, hypothesizing, checking, revising, and generalizing They propose specific exercises designed to cultivate active listening skills in students, helping them become more attuned to the "inner voice" experienced during the writing process.

Understanding the definitions of listening from various authors enhances our comprehension of its significance This insight allows us to recognize the crucial role listening plays in our daily communication and language learning processes.

Language learning depends on listening since it provides the aural input that serves as the basic for language acquisition and enables learners to interact in spoken communication

Listening is the primary language skill that children develop, serving as the foundation for their language and cognitive growth, while also playing a crucial role in lifelong communication According to a study by Wilt (1950), individuals spend 45% of their communication time listening, a finding that remains relevant and frequently cited in subsequent research Wilt's study revealed that 30% of communication time is dedicated to speaking, 16% to reading, and 9% to writing This aligns with Rankin's 1928 discovery that people engage in communication 70% of the time they are walking, with listening and speaking accounting for three-fourths of that time.

According to Bulletin (1952), listening is the fundamental language skill

In today's era of mass communication, where oral information plays a significant role, it is essential for students to develop effective and critical listening skills This medium serves as a primary source for education, information, and understanding of global and human affairs, shaping individuals' ideals, values, and appreciation of the world around them.

According to second language acquisition theory, language input is vital for language development, with listening being a key skill in this process Krashen (1985) emphasizes that language acquisition occurs through comprehending the linguistic information we hear, making listening ability essential for receiving understandable input Given its significance, language teachers must focus on fostering effective listening skills in students In a communicative approach to language teaching, this involves modeling strategies and providing authentic listening practice that learners will encounter in real-life situations Consequently, establishing a "listening-first" approach is fundamental in foreign language education.

Listening is a vital component of overall English competence, as highlighted by Wang Shouyuan (2003), who identifies it alongside speaking, reading, writing, and translation Therefore, it is essential for educators to delve into the nature and processes of listening comprehension By studying its theories and methodologies, teachers can enhance listening instruction and help students understand that listening comprehension is a fundamental aspect of learning English.

From a constructivist linguistics perspective, foreign language teaching should prioritize language form and structure, particularly in listening instruction This approach involves guiding students to differentiate between vowel and consonant pronunciations, followed by comprehension of vocabulary, sentences, and larger discourses The objective of this "bottom-up" listening model is to enhance students' understanding of vocabulary meanings through sound discrimination, facilitate comprehension of sentence meanings, and enable them to monitor and control the overall meaning of discourses.

Since the 1970s, the development of functional language theory has shifted the focus of linguistic research towards the social functions of language Experts in functional linguistics view language as a communicative tool rather than an isolated structural system Therefore, the aim of teaching listening skills goes beyond merely enabling students to hear sounds, words, or sentences; it is to enhance their ability to accurately understand speakers' intentions and communicate effectively with one another.

4 The process of listening comprehension

With a greater understanding of language quality and the development of learning theory, there has been recognition of the process of listening comprehension as needing greater emphasis

Listening is a complex mental process that can be challenging to articulate According to Wipf (1984), effective listeners must distinguish between various sounds, grasp vocabulary and grammar, interpret stress and intonation, and comprehend the speaker's intent Additionally, they must retain and interpret this information within both the immediate context and the broader socio-cultural framework of the conversation.

Listening is a multifaceted process that involves receiving spoken information, constructing meaning, negotiating understanding with the speaker, and creating meaning through empathy and imagination It requires active interpretation, where listeners align new information with their existing knowledge, making it a complex and dynamic activity.

Language learning depends on listening Listening provides the aural input that serves as the basis for language acquisition and enables learners to interact in spoken communication

Listening strategies are techniques or activities that contribute directly to the comprehension and recall of listening input

Top-down strategies focus on the listener's background knowledge of the topic, context, and language, which helps activate expectations for interpreting and anticipating information These strategies enhance comprehension by leveraging prior knowledge to make sense of auditory input.

Online learning, or e-learning, is an educational experience facilitated through computers and the Internet It involves coursework conducted in electronic forums, discussion groups, and through various online resources, including quizzes and social interaction Students engage in pair work, small group activities, and project work, all while receiving support from professional online tutors throughout the course.

2 Why do we learn English online?

Online language learning is rapidly becoming a global educational trend, with millions of students enrolled in online schools and universities in the U.S., a number that is increasing by 30% annually This growth highlights the need to focus on this effective learning method So, why should we learn English online? The numerous benefits of online language education provide compelling reasons to embrace this approach.

Studying from home offers a comfortable and familiar environment that enhances learning A relaxed atmosphere, free from the constraints of a traditional classroom, fosters productivity and engagement The ability to attend classes in your pajamas adds to the appeal of online education, making it a more enjoyable experience.

One of the key benefits of live online language learning is the flexibility to choose your own schedule Classes can be held at various times, including early mornings, during work hours, late nights, or even overnight for those who need less sleep With language trainers available across different time zones, there are no limitations on when you can learn Additionally, free online tools ensure that you can easily connect with your instructor, regardless of their location.

When learning a new language online, the abundance of tools and resources can be overwhelming, especially when deciding where to begin Many top-ranking websites serve as directories or offer numerous self-study activities, making it challenging to identify which resources align with your proficiency level and learning style A live online trainer plays a crucial role in guiding you through this vast landscape, helping you find personalized resources that cater to your unique language needs and keep you motivated.

To take charge of your language learning journey, it's essential to be self-motivated and harness your unique passions and interests to drive progress By exploring online education options, you can select a learning method that aligns with your preferences, allowing for a more personalized and effective approach to mastering a new language.

3 Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Learning

Online education has transformed the landscape of learning, making college degrees accessible to full-time employees, family-oriented professionals, single mothers, and remote students This popular form of schooling offers numerous advantages, but it may not suit everyone Therefore, potential students must consider both the benefits and drawbacks to make an informed decision about pursuing an online class or degree.

Online learning presents both advantages and disadvantages for students, depending on their computer and internet skills While proficient students can easily engage with peers and instructors, those lacking these skills may need to invest additional time to improve, either independently or with technical support Ultimately, all students will enhance their internet and computer competencies, which can provide significant benefits in the job market.

Obviously, we can‟t deny that learning online brings many benefits for English learners And following part will show advantages which could be applicable for the first year students

Balancing work and education is possible with online learning, allowing potential students to pursue part-time jobs while attending college or graduate school This flexibility helps them avoid the concerns of lost earnings and seniority, making it easier to achieve their academic goals without sacrificing their income.

Balancing family life with education can be challenging, leading some prospective students to hesitate in committing to traditional campus-based degree programs However, online classes provide a flexible solution, allowing students to attend courses at their convenience Additionally, spousal support can play a crucial role in this decision-making process.

Online interactive classes adapt to new concepts and changes more rapidly than traditional classes, which can take years to update materials This quick adaptability benefits students as their fields of study evolve Additionally, new findings from around the world can be integrated seamlessly, enhancing the learning experience Student interaction is significantly increased in online settings, allowing learners to network globally and share insights This interaction fosters valuable connections outside of school and prepares students for future professional exchanges, ultimately enhancing their comfort and confidence in collaborative environments.

Many ESL websites offer free learning materials, lesson plans, games, and instructional resources, facilitating global interaction between teachers and students Created by ESL educators, these platforms not only provide valuable resources for learners but also foster professional development by encouraging contributions and discussions among teachers worldwide This allows students of all ages and interests to independently select online materials and activities that cater to their specific language learning needs, accessible at their convenience and pace.

Jones (2000) in Moote (2002) examines the characteristics of some online learning materials for students and describes three models of online learning sites for students: distributive, tutorial and cooperative

In the distributive learning model, students can access materials and lesson sheets for independent study They engage with reading or listening passages and complete exercises such as multiple-choice or gap-filling tasks This software provides immediate feedback on their responses, enhancing the learning experience.

The tutorial model is often found on free-for-service websites that offer two-way communicate between the teacher and the learner using email, chat, telephone or video conferencing

The cooperative model allows students in the course to communicate with each other as well as with the teacher

The internet has transformed language learning for ESL students by providing a vast array of resources Numerous ESL websites feature both general and specialized collections that cater to various student needs By thoughtfully selecting appropriate websites and activities, teachers can enhance the online learning experience and equip students with the skills necessary to pursue independent language learning at their own convenience and pace.

"Learning to listen effectively is often regarded as one of the most challenging aspects of second language acquisition According to Buck (1999), learners encounter significant difficulties when it comes to understanding and responding to spoken language."

Speech is a set of acoustic signals and knowledge of the sound system of the language is needed to process the spoken text

Spoken language is different to written text It is constructed differently, is more disjunctive and has no “fluencies” like pauses, hesitations, self- corrections and repairs

Speech is fast and delivered in real time which means listeners need to process and respond quickly

Recent advancements in web technology have enhanced our understanding of spoken texts and effective listening strategies, enabling learners to better comprehend and respond to spoken English in various contexts Previously, limitations in web resources hindered ESL website developers from providing the diverse range of spoken materials and instructional activities essential for developing listening skills.

Recent advancements in web technology and personal computing have significantly expanded the variety of online resources available for learners Media players are now commonly included in commercial software and easily downloadable for free, making multimedia content more accessible Many websites, especially ESL platforms, have embraced the integration of video and audio files, enhancing language learning through diverse multimedia opportunities This growing array of online audio and video resources provides ESL students with numerous chances to improve their understanding of spoken English, with listening sites offering various genres and topics, including academic, vocational, and everyday themes like family, arts, sports, and shopping.

ESL websites provide beginner-friendly audio and video materials that are concise and presented at a slower speed, often accompanied by transcripts for simultaneous reading This allows learners to replay content as needed and learn at their own pace For advanced learners, news sites offer audio and video featuring interviews, reports, and discussions that showcase the natural characteristics of authentic spoken language, with some also providing transcripts for further support.

Learners are offered personalized choices in their learning programs, which cater to their unique listening comprehension needs This approach utilizes a diverse array of text styles and types, while also considering the interests, needs, and preferences of each learner (Burns 1997; Hoven 1999).

3 Providing a Website list for listening activity

Randall’s ESL Cyber Listening Lab offers a wealth of online English listening comprehension activities for learners It includes various resources tailored for different proficiency levels, from beginner to advanced, focusing on everyday English comprehension skills.**General ESL Listening Quizzes** The site provides a range of activities that enhance listening skills through diverse content, featuring voices of different ages and backgrounds to aid comprehension at all levels.**Explore More English Listening Activities** In addition to quizzes, Randall’s platform hosts interviews with native speakers, high-intermediate to advanced discussion activities utilizing AI technologies, and short culture videos that introduce learners to various everyday topics.

Chapter 1 has laid the foundation for understanding the concepts of listening, online learning, and specifically, online English listening In Chapter 2, we will explore how English major students at HPU enhance their English listening skills through a survey questionnaire.

A study on how English majors at HPU learn listening skill

Reality

A survey conducted at Hai Phong Private University examined the characteristics of lecturers and students, as well as the realities of their teaching and learning experiences The findings provide valuable insights into the educational environment at the institution.

1 Current learning of listening skill in Hai Phong private university

During my observation of English classes at HP Private University and through student interviews, I discovered that the effectiveness of English listening lessons is lacking The current teaching methods create a dull atmosphere, making it difficult for students to grasp new vocabulary and information Students struggle to maintain focus beyond the initial minutes of the lesson, leading to fatigue and disinterest Additionally, self-study efforts among students are minimal, with many lacking motivation to practice listening regularly To enhance engagement and improve listening skills, it is essential to introduce new activities that captivate students' interest in learning English.

Hai Phong Private University boasts a team of dynamic and dedicated English lecturers, all of whom are graduates from prestigious institutions with extensive teaching experience Their passion for education drives them to continually update resources and meticulously prepare lessons However, the reliance on outdated teaching materials, such as radio and CD recordings, along with traditional methods that emphasize challenging model lessons, has resulted in students developing a negative attitude toward English listening skills.

The Foreign Language Department at HP Private University comprises nearly 300 students across nine classes, all of whom recognize the significance of the English language in their lives However, students tend to focus more on written English than on listening and speaking skills, leading to challenges in understanding spoken conversations and a lack of confidence in communication This issue partly stems from high school learning methods, particularly affecting first-year students who struggle to adapt to university learning environments Many of these students find it difficult to grasp the content taught in listening classes due to their limited exposure to spoken English Therefore, it is essential to implement engaging listening activities that will enhance students' self-study capabilities, improve their English listening skills, and foster confidence and active participation in their learning journey.

Hai Phong Private University boasts excellent facilities and resources, providing a conducive environment for teaching and learning Equipped with modern blackboards, appropriately sized furniture, and advanced technology such as projectors and cameras in every classroom, the university enhances the educational experience Two large libraries—one in the university zone and another in the student hostel—offer access to a wide range of books, magazines, and newspapers, along with free computers for students to access information easily Since the introduction of the wire-fine internet system in 2009, students can further enhance their self-study capabilities However, the availability of English language teaching aids remains limited, as students currently rely on radio, cassette, and recordings for lessons, with inadequate sound quality and no individual headphones provided.

1 st year students, they only have four periods per week for listening subject These reasons why students have not been good at listening English yet

In short, with the modern equipments, well-trained and enthusiastic lecturer staff, Hai Phong private university still is a good environment for teaching and learning English.

Survey questionnaire

Fifteen survey questionnaires were completed by 28 first year students and some second year and third year students in English major at Hai Phong private university

2 Purpose of the survey questionnaires

A survey was conducted at Hai Phong Private University to gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced in learning English listening skills The primary objective of the study is to gather and analyze data on students' awareness and use of listening strategies The survey questionnaires were specifically designed to address these key areas.

 To make out the attitude of students towards English learning in general and English listening skill in particular

 To get more information about the real situation of leaning listening skill in class and out class in English major at Hai Phong private university

 To get to know students‟ difficulties as well as expectations to find the activities that can attract them into listening English

First-year students recognize the significance of listening skills, with 83% acknowledging its importance for their future careers Despite this awareness, only about 10% express a preference for listening, as 78% of first-year and most second- and third-year students find it challenging This disconnect highlights the need to address students' demands and foster a more positive attitude towards improving their English listening skills.

Despite some students practicing English listening skills at home, a survey revealed that 23 students only practice occasionally, with one student not practicing at all On a positive note, some students are dedicated, practicing daily for about one hour each time To improve their overall English proficiency, particularly in listening, it is essential for students to increase their practice frequency.

A survey of students' opinions on online listening activities reveals that 50% of first-year students and 100% of second and third-year students have engaged in this learning method Both groups show a preference for listening to songs and movies, while listening to news and online lectures also proves beneficial, with 30% and 50% of first-year students and 40% and 50% of second and third-year students, respectively, acknowledging their value Conversely, there is a significant lack of interest in listening to games, stories, or poems, as indicated by high percentages of disapproval from both student groups.

After conducting interviews with students regarding their expectations for enhancing their listening skills, it is clear that they share a common goal They hope to improve their listening abilities to better grasp information and acquire new vocabulary with each listening session Most importantly, they aspire to fully understand the content communicated by speakers during interactions with foreigners.

Chapter 2 presents insights gathered from a survey questionnaire regarding students' opinions, awareness, expectations, and challenges in learning English listening It also examines students' perspectives on online listening resources The findings aim to illuminate the current state of English listening education among English majors at Hai Phong Private University and evaluate the effectiveness of online learning methods from the students' viewpoint Building on these survey results, Chapter 3 will introduce engaging online listening activities designed to enhance students' self-study efforts and improve their listening skills.
