Caring Educational Leader -‐ EDAD 789 Superintendent Internship II Students in Superintendent Internship II will complete two assignments, which emphasize their commitment to being a caring leader, based on the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards The Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards (2008) were developed by the Council of Chief State School Officers in collaboration with the National Policy Board on Educational Administration (NPBEA) to help strengthen preparation programs in school leadership ISLLC Standards were based on the premise that the educational “leaders’ primary responsibility is to improve teaching and learning for all children.” The (ISLLC) Standards can be found at: http://coe.fgcu.edu/faculty/valesky/isllcstandards.htm The 2014 ISLLC Standards are currently being drafted and revised They are “based on an understanding of current research on education leadership, with the acknowledgment that research on how students learn and strategies for engaging learners are evolving more quickly than ever “ Xavier University will incorporate the new eleven Standards once they are adopted The course professor will discuss caring leadership dispositions during the course, including the importance of a Student Learning Focus, Collaborative/Collegial Professionalism, and High Expectations for Student Achievement Meaningful examples/scenarios of a caring leader in the educational setting will be provided, such as a caring leader’s purpose, actions, and goals The ISLCC Standards (2008) will provide a structure for the dispositions ASSIGNMENTS Mission Statement Students will develop a Personal/Professional Mission Statement, which emphasizes the leader’s commitment to being a caring leader, based on the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards The mission statement should be clear, concise and easy to remember It serves as a framework for leading an organization and making decisions It clearly communicates a leader’s purpose and passion The attached Caring Leader Mission Statement Rubric will guide the evaluation of this assignment As Sergiovanni explains, anyone aspiring to be an effective leader needs to have a sense of what he or she values, something to be committed to, and a moral compass to lead the way (2006) Student Performance Task A caring leader’s actions and patterns of professional conduct influence behaviors toward staff, students, families, and community members, and ultimately impact students learning A student will demonstrate evidence of his or her caring disposition in the school setting The school district mentor and the Xavier professor will assess the student’s skill and performance in three caring principles (i.e Student Learning, Collaboration/ Collegiality, and High Expectations) The attached Caring Leader – Student Performance Rubric will guide the evaluation of the Student Performance Task Course grading for the two assignments will be as follows Grading Scale: Elements Mission Statement (see rubric) Student Performance Task (see rubric) Criteria Clarity, based on ISLCC Standards, reflects caring disposition, reflects purpose and passion Student Learning Collaboration/Collegiality High Expectations Possible Points per Element Mission Statement Grade Conversion: 3=A; 2=B; 1=C Student Performance Task Grade Conversion: 9=A+; 8=A; 7=A-‐; 6=B+; 5=B; 4=B-‐; 3=C+; 2= C; 1=C-‐ Percent of Final Grade 15 ...
