The Search for Peace in Times of Chaos—Volume level is often called the bridge to total freedom Scientologists progress from preclear to clear and ultimately operating thetan Scientology has a series of techniques called “assists” which are believed to alleviate injury, trauma or discomfort These techniques used are based on the belief that the spirit can solve the body’s difficulties by putting the spirit in communication with the body Scientology oversees a program referred to as the P “ urification Rundown,” which is promoted as a method of “detoxification” developed by L Ron Hubbard It involves the use of saunas, exercise, vitamins, the drinking of oils, as well as light jogging The Purification Rundown is usually the first step taken by a Scientologist attempting to attain a state of “Clear” and is promoted as a health regimen within Scientology and in Scientology’s drug rehabilitation program Narconon.19 The Auditing Session Scientology presents two major divisions of the mind The reactive mind is thought to absorb all pain and emotional trauma, while the analytical mind is a rational mechanism, which is responsible for consciousness The reactive mind stores mental images that are not readily available to the analytical (conscious) mind; these are referred to as engrams Engrams are believed to be painful and debilitating; as they accumulate, people move further away from their true identity To avoid this fate is the scientologist’s basic goal Dianetic training is the tool through which the scientologist progresses toward the clear state, winning gradual freedom from the reactive mind’s engrams and acquiring certainty of his or her reality as a thetan The primary way that Scientology’s principles are applied to an individual is called —from the Latin word audire, meaning “to listen.” Auditing in the context of Dianetics and Scientology is an activity where a person trained in “auditing” listens and gives auditing commands to a subject, (a “preclear”) which seeks to elevate the mind to a state of Clear, one of freedom from the influences of the reactive mind By doing this, the subjects are said to be able to free themselves from unwanted barriers that inhibit their natural abilities Scientologists state that the person being audited is completely aware of everything that happens and becomes even more alert as auditing progresses ~ 407 ~
