        • Although this is not a theoretical work, students may follow some guidelines on how to help themselves to evaluate their own work. Below are general principles which are relevant to all translation.

        • 2.2.1.1. Meaning

        • The translation should reflect accurately the meaning of original text. Nothing should be arbitrarily added or moved, though occasionally part of the meaning can be “transpose”.

      • Eg: He was limps with fatigue

      • The order of words and ideas in the translation should match that in the original as closely as possible. This is particularly in the form and order of words. When in doubt, underline in the original text, the words on which the main stress falls. In English, emphasis or main stress can be obtained through inversion of word order and using different structure such as No sooner… than…, It is/was … that (who)…, Only by…, etc.

      • Eg: It is the ideal condition of the “equal start” which only our most progressive forms of modern education try to regain.

        • Languages often differ greatly in their levels of formality in a given context (say, in a business letter). To resolve these differences, the translator must distinguish between formal and fixed expressions

      • SL grammatical constructions are converted to their nearest TL equivalents, but the lexical words are again translated singly out of context. As a pre-translation process, this indicates the problem to be solved.

        • 2.2.2.3. Faithful Translation

      • A faithful translation attempts to reproduce the precise contextual meaning of the original meaning within the constraint of the TL grammatical structures. It “transfers” cultural words and preserves the degree of grammatical and lexical “abnormality” in the translation. It attempts to be completed faithfully to intentions and the text realization of the SL writer.

      • Eg: Love me, love my dog

      • Yêu tôi, (thì phải) yêu con chó của tôi

        • 2.2.2.4. Semantic translation

      • This method must pay more attention to the aesthetic value (that is, the beautiful and natural sound) of the SL text compromising on “meaning” where appropriate so that no assonance, word-play or repetition jars in the finished version. Furthermore, it may translate less important cultural words by culturally neutral third or functional terms but not by cultural equivalents and it may make other small concessions to the readership. The distinction between “faithful” and “semantic” translation is that the first in uncompromising and dogmatic while the second is more flexible; admits the creative exception to 100% of fidelity and allows for translator’s intuitive empathy with the original.

        • 2.2.2.5. Adaptation

      • This is the “freest” form of translation, used mainly for plays (comedies) and poetry. The themes, characters, plots are usually preserved, the SL culture is converted to the TL one, and the text is rewritten.

        • 2.2.2.6. Free Translation

      • This method reproduces the matter without the manner, or the content without the form of the original. Usually, it is a paraphrase much longer than the original, a so-called “intra-lingual translation”, often prolix, pretentious, and seeming non-translated at all.

      • Eg: Have a good trip!

        • 2.2.2.7. Idiomatic Translation

      • Idiomatic translation reproduces the “message” of the source text but tend to distort nuances of meaning by preferring colloquialisms and idioms where these do not exist in the original.

      • This method attempts to render the exact contextual meaning of the original in such a way that both content and language are readily acceptable and comprehensible to the readership. This translation is rather often news on radio or in newspapers. Sometimes communicative and semantic translation may coincide with each other.

    • My major is English Translation and Interpretation, so I did study profoundly about translation theory and practices. During my process of learning at Faculty of English Duy Tan University, I had the golden opportunity to study many useful lessons which concern to translation with the well-qualified teachers. Nevertheless, I faced many difficulties and challenges during the implementation of this paper.

    • Firstly, the author used a diverse vocabulary. One of the most difficult issues was determining which meanings of words and phrases to use in a given context. If I didn't use the strict sense of the word during the translation process, the meaning of the sentence would obviously change. So, I had to read extensively on the subject. Then, I should find out and se information from the internet as well as a variety of dictionaries in order to translate words with the right and exact context. Besides, I also had to settle a lot of idioms and ambiguous structures. As a result, analyzing and translating such complicated pieces will be much simpler and clear for me.

    • Secondly, there's the systemic problem, which is also a thorny issue. This text contains many complicated structures and phrases that are difficult or even obscure to analyse in this text. It made me really upset because couldn't figure out what the text meant exactly. So I sought guidance from my supervisor and my friends in order to gain a better understanding and translation.

    • Thirdly, the structure and use of words in English and Vietnamese are entirely different. So, in order to accurately communicate the details of the original text to the reader, I need to understand and interpret the meaning in order to fit the Vietnamese writing style.

    • Finally, I store my mind in order to broaden my public knowledge based on my limited experience. In the period of executing this thesis, there were many times I was confused and wasted a lot of time because of some American cultural and religious vocabulary.

    • In short, to avoid making the same mistakes and improve the quality of my similar projects in the future, vocabulary, structures and general knowledge are three main points that I should stay focused on.

RATIONALE

We hold the power to shape our own destinies, as the starting points merely guide our journey While some may find it easier to advance, each of us is capable of transforming our lives by actively creating our identities rather than succumbing to the role of a victim of circumstances.

Success is a multifaceted concept, with varying definitions that include possessing valuable assets, achieving a high social status, or enjoying a happy family life with sufficient living conditions Ultimately, regardless of how one defines success, it can be viewed as an essential life goal.

Success requires navigating various paths and overcoming numerous challenges, with some individuals facing repeated setbacks while others may choose to abandon their journey Many mistakenly believe in shortcuts to success, prompting me to translate "A Shortcut to Success," a book filled with valuable life lessons This experience has revealed numerous small yet significant insights, and now it's your opportunity to learn how this approach can launch your promising career and enhance your life.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

This study focuses on practical translation skills, aiming to equip translators with the ability to effectively translate texts between English and Vietnamese It highlights various methods and techniques that enhance translation quality and showcases the skill variations present in translated works Additionally, the research emphasizes the importance of conveying the original message clearly to ensure that non-native speakers grasp the intended ideas without confusion Ultimately, the goal is to engage a wide audience of readers interested in the subject matter.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

In a friendly and approachable style, the author offers sincere advice on transforming your life through a shift in thinking After years of research, he shares effective methods for achieving success and a fulfilling life The book's clear and relatable language makes it easy for readers to grasp and apply the solutions presented While it may be hard to believe in the book's transformative power, it promises to impart valuable lessons that empower you to create the life you desire.

Translation theory focuses on identifying effective translation methods applicable to diverse texts and categories It establishes a framework of principles and guidelines that aid in translation and interpretation, offering solutions to related challenges Furthermore, it can illustrate the rationale behind choosing one translation over another in specific contexts Importantly, translation emphasizes the decision-making process rather than the technical aspects of the source or target languages.

There are many definitions about translation:

“Translation is the expression in another language (target language) of what has been expressed in one language (source language),preserving semantic and stylistic equivalencies” (Roger T Bell) [2]

“Translation is the replacement of a representation of a text in one language by a representation of an equivalent text in a second language”. (Roger T Bell) [2]

“Translation is rendering the meaning of a text into another language in the way that the author intended the text” ( Peter Newmark)

“Translation is the replacement of textual material in one language (source language) by equivalent textual material in another language (target language)” ( J.C Catford) [1]

“Translation is a process of conveying messages across linguistic and cultural barriers” (Dr Ian Tudor) [1]

Translation is the comprehension of the meaning of a text and the subsequent production of an equivalent text, likewise called a

Translation fundamentally involves altering the form of written or spoken content, encompassing various elements such as words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs.

In translation, the structure of the source language is transformed into the equivalent structure of the target language, ensuring that the original meaning is preserved in the translated text.

The primary goal of translation is to convey the meaning from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL) This process involves transforming the structure of the first language into that of the second language while maintaining the semantic integrity.

PRINCIPLE AND METHODS OF TRANSLATION

While this article is not a theoretical guide, it offers valuable tips for students to assess their own translation work The following general principles are applicable to all aspects of translation evaluation.

- Retain the original expression with a literal explanation in brackets

In the document "Theories of Translation," edited by Mr Nguyen Manh Quang from Duy Tan University, several key methods and principles for effective translation are outlined These guidelines serve as a foundation for translators to ensure accuracy and coherence in their work.

Interlinear translation features the target language (TL) positioned directly beneath the source language (SL) words, maintaining the original word order This method translates words individually using their most common meanings, often without context, and cultural terms are rendered literally Word-for-word translation primarily serves to grasp the structure of the SL or to prepare for translating a complex text.

My journey began with a shift in perspective, as I realized that prayer served as a form of goal-setting, even if I didn't recognize it at the time This insight prompted me to explore the importance of goal setting and identifying opportunities in future sections of this book A significant milestone in my life was becoming a physician assistant, a dream I held since age 12 after a minor injury sparked my interest in medicine Despite childhood doubts instilled by negative programming regarding my financial and intellectual capabilities, I persevered and, against the odds of having average college grades, was accepted into a medical program.
