      • 1.1. General knowledge of translation

      • 1.1.1. The definition

      • Translation has been defined in numerous way according to the view of each writer, translator and reader. However, there are some typical definitions which used popularly.

      • Lewis (1958:265) points out that “ "translate" is formed from the Latin

      • "trans + latus", which means "carried across"”. For Wilss (1982), translation is a transfer process, which aims at the transformation of written source language text into an optimally equivalent target language text, and which requires the syntactic, the semantic and the pragmatic understanding and analytical processing of the source language. According to Foster (1958:1), translation as the act of transferring through which the content of a text is transferred from the SL (source language) into the TL (target language). Besides, Tu Anh (2005) wrote that “Translation is the transmission of a thought expressed in one language by means of another language. The language used to express the thought directly is called the source language, and the language used to translate that thought is called the target language”

      • Translation, by the dictionary definition, is something that is translated, or the process of translating something, from one language to another. (Cambridge English Dictionary). According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, 1974, translation consists of changing from one state or form to another, to turn into one’s own or another’s language. Therefore, translation is basically a change of form.

      • From all of the definitions above, we can conclude that translation is the action of designing equivalent “version” in the TL to preserve all the surface and hidden values of the work in SL.

Rationale of the study

English has emerged as the global language of business, widely utilized by organizations for communication, including emails and contracts Consequently, proficiency in English is essential for the success of any business, particularly for foreign direct investment (FDI) companies.

English serves as the common language for business partners who do not share a native tongue, highlighting the necessity of translation for effective communication In Vietnam, foreign direct investment and import-export companies rely on accurate translations of various documents, including emails and contracts, to engage and negotiate with partners Notably, translated contracts are crucial as they serve as the primary evidence of collaboration between partners, underscoring the importance of ensuring that translation quality is both precise and clear.

CHAPTER 1: LITERATURE REVIEW 1.1 General knowledge of translation

Translation has been defined in numerous way according to the view of each writer, translator and reader However, there are some typical definitions which used popularly.

Lewis (1958:265) points out that “ "translate" is formed from the Latin

Translation, derived from "trans + latus" meaning "carried across," is a complex transfer process that transforms written text from a source language (SL) to a target language (TL) According to Wilss (1982), this process requires a deep understanding of the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of the source language Foster (1958) emphasizes that translation involves the transfer of content from SL to TL, while Tu Anh (2005) defines translation as the transmission of a thought expressed in one language into another, identifying the source language as the original and the target language as the medium of translation.

Translation, as defined by the Cambridge English Dictionary, refers to the process of converting text from one language to another The Merriam-Webster Dictionary further elaborates that translation involves altering something from one state or form to another, effectively transforming it into a different language In essence, translation is fundamentally about changing the form of content to facilitate understanding across linguistic boundaries.

Translation involves creating an equivalent version in the target language (TL) that maintains both the explicit and implicit values of the original work in the source language (SL).

Nearly all translators and translation companies, as noted by PACTRANZ (Pacific International Translations), follow a five-step language translation process This structured approach is essential because translation is a mentally demanding task that requires careful execution to ensure high-quality results.

This is the five-step language translation process. i) Overview

Before translating a text, it's essential to thoroughly assess its content, including the subject matter, length, writing style, and structure of various sections This initial evaluation sets the foundation for an accurate and coherent translation.

Before starting the translation process, the translator often reads or skims the text to understand its context and identify key concepts or terminology that require further research They may also conduct preliminary background reading if necessary In some cases, translations for essential terms are resolved prior to commencing the translation.

In this step, the translator systematically translates the text in manageable chunks of 5 to 10 words Selecting the right length is crucial; ideal chunks convey a complete unit of meaning while remaining short enough for easy retention in short-term memory Text chunks exceeding 10 words can hinder memorization and translation efforts.

However, sentences are frequently longer than 10 words so that it’s usually broken down into shorter units
