LITERATURE REVIEW

Today, teenagers have misconceptions and actions about modern lifestyles, such as increasing sex before marriage This problem occurs because so many emotional motivations, social influences, love, and personal needs prevent them from understanding premarital sex For this reason, many people believe that it is not necessary to delay having sex until marriage, which has caused quite a bit of controversy Some say it should or not However, it is essential to know what you are doing or need Since then, it has become a hot issue for authors and researchers They created completely logical and convincing results

In recent years, the amount of literature on premarital sex has mcreased Each author gives ideas that may have the same opinion or may be contrary to clarify this issue with young people One study by Nicholas H Wolfinger (2016) identified teenagers’ trend to have sex before marriage, as this problem has become increasingly hot in recent years

He pointed out that the relationship before marriage is no longer so meaningful Instead, they love, respect, and help each other Recent evidence suggests that one of the factors that premarital sex agreed is having sex before marrage has a purpose is sex while dating now and can be considered an essential method for checking whether a couple is suitable for each other (Dr Andrew Magers, 2020) It suggested that having sex is not entirely wrong, as it has the potential to offer so many benefits, making people healthier if they have a healthy relationship It also fulfills our carnal desires for pleasure and intimacy, yet it also has some lovely critical science-sponsored medical advantages Jill Filipovic (2013) provided an in-depth analysis about people with active sex lives live longer Sex relieves stress, boosts immunity, aids sleep, and promotes heart health She decided to be one of the first to say it, and so she did: "Having sex before marriage is the best choice for nearly everyone,” backed up with several arguments Pretty much everyone does it (even back in the old days); sex is more happiness-producing than money; sex 1s good for health, she explained-and those things hold regardless of marnage Views of premarital

sex have changed, and Filipovic is right We see it in movies, we read about it in books, most of us do it with varying degrees of regularity and commitment We are grown-up consenting adults, after all, free to live our lives Culturally, it is gotten to the point that there is even a bit of a reverse shaming at work: Despite what the abstinence promoters’ voice, "virginity" past a certain age is regarded with more confusion and possibly even concem than the opposite The 40- Year-Old Virgin is perhaps the most obvious cmematic example, where that sexual status is a joke, even, and a bit weird

Premarital sex is not entirely immoral, but with certain cultures, beliefs, and religions, this is a fundamental issue In some places, premarital relationships can be harshly opposed The book "Sex, Dating, and Relationships: A Fresh Approach" by Gerald Hiestand and Jay S Thomas (2012) illustrated a persuasive argument that some people do not fully understand sex and dating The authors emphasized that sexually transmitted

consequences that made it harder for people to deal with sexual problems They did not want to create any new rules, and they wanted to be clear to young people about sex and love Previous research had reported the percentage of virgin women who had a better- married life than the rest, accounting for 11% m 1980 (Nicholas Wolfinger, 2016) Another survey by author Bill Hendrick (2012) reported that delaying sex until marriage gave the couple a sense of appreciation because they felt respected and satisfied Not just religion, waiting helps the relationship create better communication processes, improving long-term stability and relationship satisfaction That means more time helping them get

to know each other and develop skills needed for a better relationship

Kara Mayer Robinson (2013) investigated sex as a medicine of health benefits, aside from aiding reproduction and being pleasurable According to UNICEF (2001), 10 out of

12 in developed nations, more than two-thirds of young people have had sexual intercourse while still in their teens Data from several sources have identified over a quarter (26%) of American adults think that monogamy is unrealistic, as claimed by the

2016 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll Premarital sex, since about the 1960s, has become more widely accepted, especially in Western countries

Premarital sexual behavior 1s not accepted culturally and socially Dates from several sources show that 16% of women aged 25-49 had first sexual intercourse by age 15, 54 percent by age 18, and 72 percent by age 20 According to a study done by Bhatta DN, et

al (2013), there was highly significant relationship between smoking, alcohol drinking, and drug using habit of their peers with the sex He also showed that 16% of participants who had premarital sex had faced unintended pregnancies To assess the impact of premarital sex, Musa Abdullahi and Abdullah Umar, et al (2013) reported that 93% of respondents believed that engaging in premarital sex could lead to HIV/STIs

In conclusion, sexuality plays an important role in conjugal and other types of long-term relationships across cultures The attitudes toward conjugal sexuality, the frequency of

communication, can have significant impacts on the level of sexual fulfillment and satisfaction with the relationship Even though there is no "correct" amount or type of sex that depicts solid connections, research suggests that accomplices will be generally fulfilled-explicitly and non-sexually when people use sexual movement to communicate feelings of affection, responsibility, and closeness and when they agree on the role that sexuality ought to play

METHODOLOGY

This research project about premarital sex would take place in Vietnam It was carried out

in the first semester in 2021-2022 to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of having sex before marriage among Vietnamese people over 16 years old In this project, there were two kinds of data being used in this study, namely, quantitative data and qualitative data Sample selection criteria included the participants would be over-16- year-old people of all gender, from every field and every random region in Vietnam A random sample of patients was 400 people voluntarily joming the online survey and 20 interviewees All of them could be whether already having sex or not and whether they got married or not They had to have a piece of specific knowledge to identify the pros and cons of premarital sex so that the project could reach accurate data In particular, this analysis was problematic that for Vietnamese culture, the sexual topic was somewhat sensitive for people to talk about This issue led to a restriction that the target tended to be afraid to be a participant Thus, all participants would be explained the aspirations of this study, ensured that the collecting data would be completely private, and there was no assemblage of their identifying information The participants, then, were able to be the most comfortable and not concerned to start

To collect data, two main techniques were used, online survey and offline interview With the former, we uploaded the questionnaire online in order to hit participants from different regions conveniently With the latter, we chose members for search at random The project instrument was a questionnaire in both online surveys and face-to-face interviews We used Google Form for an online survey which was a website that allowed

us to make a questionnaire with distinct types of questions In other words, the survey

8

Trang 9

contained 16 questions consisting of dichotomous questions, choices questions, and open- ended questions About the face-to-face interview, we selected seven significant questions

in the online survey questionnaire to interview people After we had already done with setting up the questionnaires, we uploaded the link of our form to Facebook (a networking site) to hit people from different regions In both online surveys and interviews, participants’ acceptance and comfort were the priority The time for filling in the form could require 4 to 6 minutes However, for those being interviewees, they needed to spend less time than the online survey; 2 to 3 minutes were maximum Furthermore, based on participants’ agreements, all survey questionnaires were collected

by Google Form, and all interviews were recorded using a voice or video recorder from a smartphone And it took four days to collect the data of 400 forms and 20 interview records When the data was finally collected, we used the Google Form to analyze the quantitative data into two particular graphs, pie graph and bar graph, to demonstrate numbers of the dichotomous questions and choices questions Regarding qualitative data (open-ended questions and interviews), we would read them precisely, classified the main ideas into specific groups, figured out the proportions, and put the results into the table

FINDINGS AGE GROUPS

Fig.1: Age Of Survey Participants -

age groups of the survey participants divided into the under and over 18 From the graph above we can see that

89.5%, this figure is nearly nine times

higher than that of people under 18 years old, at 10.5%

Fig.3: The Sex Status of Survey Participantts SEX & MARITAL STATUS

Next, as shown in Figure 2 which gives information about the percentage of the

were having married among these answerers while more than half of them (56.3%) said that they had already had sex (Figure 3)

Trang 11

What is interesting in this data is that over three-quarters (76.7%) of survey respondents

in response to the question: “Would you still want to get married to a person who had sex before?” said yes (Figure 5) and comfortably gave specific reasons for that One individual stated that “People have the complete right to love and have sex with another person because it is an essential need of a normal psycho-developed person.” And another commented, “Love does not depend on one's past If I love her, there is no reason for me to reject.” Therefore, we can understand that the younger have better perceptions

of premarital sex and are no longer constrained to ancient cultural regulations

Finally, this research suggests that examination of sexual behavior among the youngers should not be neglected Based on the results in this study, it is necessary and very urgent for national surveys of sexual behavior, reproductive health, or fertility to take this group

of individuals in their samples
