III Business reality of homestay in Vietnam
People tend to run homestays but do not really bring the true values that customers expect
to receive back when going for a homestay
As a matter of fact, many investors just follow newly emerging tendencies and make up their mind to pour an abundance of money into homestay without any understanding of what the core values of homestay are Therefore, they will provide accommodation services without any element of cultural experience, customs and manners, or experiencing local cuisine and lifestyle These factors coupled with the easy licensing of business activities for the homestay, which lead to an alarming fact that the construction
of homestays is swiftly massive
As a consequence, after a period of success, a lot of homestays at famous tourist destinations are currently in a slump, even free to attract customers still ineffectively, despite a number of tourists coming to these tourist attractions However, they choose other types of accommodation instead of homestay
Another consequence to be taken into consideration is that many homestays have to even close or operate on a limited basis Some decided to discount room prices in the hope of attracting customers In this way, they can sell additional services to compensate for room
fees
Some stark examples ass below:
GROUP A 9
Trang 12In Cam Chau - one of the first places in Hoi An to organize house cleaning to welcome guests staying in 2009, out of 11 homestays from the first day until now, only 2 establishments are still operating moderately
Thai people in Lac village (Mai Chau, Hoa Binh) started making homestays very successfully and became the highlight of this model But now Lac village, with hundreds
of homestays, has become a bustling place identical to Western Pham Ngu Lao Street (HCMC) The quality of service has not changed, every house has karaoke., Nevertheless, they has been competing each other to attract more guests To make the matter worse, The shops are crowded but all are Chinese without any vietnamese traits The price of a place to sleep is only 20% of the price 10 years ago but it is still scattered Only noisy on weekends, guests stop by to take selfies or eat, then find another place to sleep Even so, new homestays in Lac Village and many other places are still busy with construction
IV Remedial solutions to improve the efficiency of homestay business operations in Vietnam
1 There needs to be systematic planning and specific plans
To avoid "spontaneity" in the homestay business, local tourism management agencies need to have systematic planning (calculate the number of visitors; length of stay and capacity of local accommodation facilities; Survey the accommodation needs of tourists visiting local tourist areas and attractions; Survey the area, location, infrastructure; ) to have a suitable homestay development plan There should not be widespread growth in quantity; It should not be developed in locations too far from tourist attractions and tourist attractions, in areas that are poor in tourism resources, both natural resources and unique indigenous cultural values
2 Pay attention to quality and create attractiveness
In addition to providing mainly accommodation services for tourists with quality standards according to regulations, homestays need to develop a variety of other services such as: food services with local styles and characteristics; entertainment with collective
GROUP A 10
Trang 13activities in folk and traditional styles (artistic performances, ethnic music and dance, folk songs, traditional folk dance, mass arts); Sports activities combining exploration and learning about local characteristics such as cycling, walking, climbing to explore natural landscapes; Activities associated with health care according to indigenous methods such
as picking medicine, making medicine, medicinal baths, saunas, acupuncture, etc.; Practical experience activities such as participating in farming, production, handicraft making, etc
Homestay owners and family members participating in homestays must be equipped with basic and necessary knowledge, skills and operations about tourism and accommodation business At the same time, local tourism management agencies also need to pay attention and support people to equip themselves with knowledge, skills, and experience in organizing and managing homestays
3 Promote linkages in homestay management and development
Instead of each homestay doing business independently as before, now it is necessary to promote connectivity, cooperation, and mutual development Linking homestays will create "homestay communities", "homestay villages" or “homestay clubs" in the same area Besides, there needs to be a General Management Board for participating members This brings great benefits in tourist management, service provision, and promotion: Promoting linkages does not mean breaking competition between homestays Competition will push community members to actively innovate and improve their service quality to gain the choice of customers However, homestay association will overcome the negative side of competition by regulating, sharing benefits, sharing experiences, supporting and helping each other among members to develop together
4, Strengthen promotion and attract tourists
- The government needs to pay more attention and increase investment in promotion and advertising for local homestays
