In recent years, Vietnamese universities have shifted their enrollment strategies to include a combination of international English certificates and university test scores, significantly impacting admission rates For instance, the National Economic University reported that 40% of its enrollment targets were met through this approach in 2021, while the Foreign Trade University saw this figure rise to 50% This new policy presents a valuable opportunity for students with average academic performance to gain admission to prestigious institutions, as the traditional admissions process often favors those with higher scores.

International English tests offer significant advantages for learners, but their rising popularity is influenced by various factors beyond just educational benefits Given the limited research on this topic, we conducted a study titled “The Real Situation of Using International English Certificates in the University Entrance Exams of Students in Hanoi.”

Objectives of the study

This study investigates the current usage of international English certificates in various schools and universities, highlighting the positive and negative impacts these certifications have on students' college admissions.

This research evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of obtaining English certificates, highlighting the types of candidates who should pursue international English qualifications for university applications The findings aim to provide valuable guidance for parents and students in deciding whether to invest in English certification.

Scope of the study

This study specifically examines high school students, graduates, and postgraduates in Hanoi who utilize English certificates for university admissions, acknowledging that while international certificates are essential for everyone, the research is limited by time, cost, and resources The aim is to identify the key factors influencing their use of these certificates in university entrance exams.

Methods of the study

Students' English proficiency is typically assessed through English certificates, with various universities implementing distinct criteria for accepting these foreign qualifications for admission For example, institutions focused on economics often demand higher language proficiency scores compared to those in the technology field.

Reasons why students choose to use international English certificates to get

In recent years, the trend of requiring English certificates for university admissions has gained significant attention from both students and parents Understanding how to effectively utilize these certificates has become essential Consequently, extensive research has been conducted to explore the advantages that English certificates offer in the admissions process.

The more developed the economy is, the more important role English plays.

Proficiency in English is essential for numerous jobs that require effective communication and writing, often leading to higher wages for employees Individuals skilled in English become invaluable assets to their companies, distinguishing themselves from those lacking such abilities This emphasis on English proficiency explains the growing focus on enhancing English skills, as obtaining English certificates can serve as a testament to one's capabilities.

Tran Huu Chung, vice president of Gia Dinh University, emphasizes that obtaining an international foreign language certificate for university admission is an inevitable trend that will broaden opportunities for candidates He notes that proficiency in foreign languages provides a significant advantage in both academic and professional settings Similarly, Tran Khac Thac, vice president of training at Thuy Loi University, advocates for high school students to dedicate equal time to enhancing their foreign language skills alongside subjects like Math and Literature This preparation is crucial, especially with the impending opening of the ASEAN labor market, where those lacking English proficiency may struggle in domestic competition Thus, possessing an English certificate not only facilitates university admission but also enhances job prospects in the future.

Many students struggle to balance their preparation for international English certificates with their other academic subjects due to time constraints The unique question formats of these certificates require significant study and familiarization, making it challenging to maintain focus on specific goals As a result, students often find it difficult to achieve high scores in both international English assessments and high school graduation exams simultaneously.

Repeatedly taking the IELTS test can lead to significant time and financial loss for students who fail to reach their target band score For instance, a student aiming for a 6.5 may only achieve a 6.0, resulting in an additional cost of nearly 5 million for retaking the exam.

The rising trend of obtaining international English certificates has pressured many parents to push their children into taking these exams, often resulting in significant stress for students Those lacking proficiency in English may experience depression and struggle to achieve positive outcomes Additionally, this obsession has given rise to numerous cram centers offering low-quality instruction and tips aimed solely at achieving high scores.

That is the reason why sometimes the students who achieve high scores in international English certificates are not as good at English as the lower ones.

In summary, utilizing international English certificates for university admission offers numerous benefits; however, potential drawbacks also exist Therefore, it is essential for students and parents to conduct thorough research and seek guidance to mitigate these negative impacts.

A total of 20 students pursued international English certificates to secure scholarships for studying abroad, while 18 students opted for these certificates due to the convenience of not needing to take graduation English exams Additionally, a small number of students had other motivations for obtaining these qualifications.

RECOMMENDATIONS

In today's academic landscape, obtaining English certificates has become increasingly essential for university applications However, students must research the specific requirements of each institution, as they vary significantly For instance, Foreign Trade University mandates a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, while National Economics University accepts students with a score of 5.5.

III.1.2 Suggestion on how to balance other subjects

Many students struggle to balance learning English with other subjects, which can result in ineffective study habits To maximize their learning, students should create a clear timetable and adhere to it Additionally, identifying their proficiency levels and selecting appropriate study methods will enhance their overall effectiveness in mastering the language.

Suggestion for parents

Parents play a crucial role in influencing students' decisions regarding the use of international English certificates To support their children effectively, parents are encouraged to consider various factors and make informed choices.

III.2.1 It is a necessity for parents to find out real benefits and understand the right definition of the international English certificate

Parents should figure out the true benefits of international English certificates

International English certificates offer significant advantages for university admissions, yet many parents mistakenly believe that obtaining one is mandatory for their children As more students acquire these certifications, a trend emerges, prompting parents to pressure their children into pursuing them without fully understanding their actual benefits.

III.2.2 It is necessary to set suitable expectations on students’ goal

Parents must recognize their children's abilities to avoid setting unrealistic expectations that can lead to unnecessary stress For instance, if a student is capable of achieving a score of 6.0 on the IELTS exam, but their parents anticipate an 8.0, it can create significant pressure on the student.

In summary, parents are encouraged to guide students towards obtaining international English certificates, as these qualifications offer numerous benefits However, it is essential for parents to thoroughly research the options available and foster motivation in their children to pursue these certifications effectively.

The research team conducted a survey using Google Forms to assess the usage of international English certificates in university entrance exams among high school students in Hanoi A total of 50 students from various institutions, including NEU, HUST, and FTU, participated in the survey, providing valuable insights into the current trends and practices regarding English certification in the context of higher education admissions.

Ninety-three percent of the participants in the study were undergraduate and high school students, highlighting their significant role in English language certification The research revealed that international English certificates are prevalent, with half of the respondents already holding a certificate and 41 percent expressing a desire to obtain one Among the various options, IELTS emerged as the preferred choice for all participants when applying to universities, solidifying its status as a leading international English certificate.

International English certificates have become a crucial requirement for university admissions, as a significant number of individuals surveyed acknowledge their importance Nearly every university now includes these certificates as a key component of the admissions process, highlighting their essential role in academic applications.
